274A — Young and sweet...
I didn't post anything on Insta today for my birthday, but if I had, it would've been captioned "can't dance but still a dancing queen."
Today was my 17th birthday, and it was an excellent day! I got up at a relatively normal time for once, and the adrenaline kicked in early, making getting up slightly less painful than it normally is. Breakfast was cake, which, surprisingly, also had MIT spelled on it with Fruit Rollup, which was pretty cool. After that, we actually had to go to school, and we arrived later than usual, although early enough to get a spot in 'A' lot. (On the way, I discovered that the time between windshield wipers going was adjustable on one of the settings, which is a complaint my mom has had for nearly a decade of owning the car, which was quite funny.)
I worked on some Spanish homework in the library before classes, and the birthday wishes/harassment began there. AP Psych was no better, involving a brief stint of me wearing the somewhat notorious "birthday hat", but the FRQ I took were relatively simple, so the class on the whole was mostly fine (although writing FRQ is just so boring...). Spanish 4 involved...something about Spanish that felt pretty typical, but my primary memory is that of watching snow fall outside the window (I took this to be my birthday "gift" from the weather) and then refreshing the Presidential Scholars website, seeing the list up, and finding my name on it! (This was taken to be a birthday gift from the US government and Betsy DeVos.)
Yes, I was selected as a Presidential Scholar today, and I'm pretty proud about it, to be honest. It's sort of a culmination of all the good luck I've had this year, from debate to RSI (and counselor) to college apps to FIRST and whatnot. To some extent, it also represents a culmination of four years of work, although the amount of "work" I put in can be considered dubious to some extent. I am reminded of a quote which is most likely apocryphally attributed to Jefferson, which is "I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it." Maybe this is coming true for me, but in any case more work is still required. Laziness cannot be tolerated at MIT, and I seem to be doing a lot of it recently. This selection may disrupt some of my plans at RSI, but we'll see how that goes as well—this should be resolved in a few days or so.
After Spanish came Orchestra, where, fortunately, there were no birthday shenanigans, but rather just some very exciting rehearsal of some of the more fun parts of the music we're playing. Concert on Monday!
I went home after that, and after some rest and lunch I did a little bit of AP Bio homework before I had to go back to school, where I started making copies for the wind All-State packets, which was quite an experience. Returning home after that, I took another long break before bashing through more and more AP Bio. 8 hours of required review time remain, distributed over three days. This is fine.
Dinner was noodles, and I had some conversation with various friends in the surrounding time which resulted in quite a bit of excessive meme-ry (and some impressive guessing game participation by a certain mathwizard). More AP Bio was done after that, but I'm planning on sleeping a very slight bit earlier today! Yay.
Tomorrow, some robotics stuff and tours and whatnot. I'm not sure, but if I have time to work it'll definitely be over AP Bio! Wheeeee...
